As the 2018-2019 school year gets back into full swing, Babcock Ranch Neighborhood School is opening its doors to a new way of learning.

The new school will focus on project-based learning, PBL. In a PBL setting, students work on a project over an extended period, possibly for one week or an entire semester. The extra time allows students to solve a real-world problem or answering a complicated question, according to Buck Institute for Education.

Babcock Neighborhood School is in the process of becoming the first certified PBL school in the entire state of Florida.

“It’s really about equipping students not only with the academic standards but also the skill sets they need in real life,” said Shannon Treece, who is the principal of Babcock Neighborhood School.

The new charter school broke ground nearly seven months ago. On Friday, Aug. 10, 2018, 350 students, ranging from kindergarten through the 7th grade, will start their first day of school at Babcock Ranch.

Project-based learning curriculum will be taught to 4th graders and up. The students will still have to take standardized tests.
